Panel: Key Issues and Open Questions in Mathematics Education Research
Panelists will share their view of the key issues and open questions at the forefront of collaborative research in undergraduate mathematics education, including higher learning and teacher preparation.
Panelists:
Dr. Orly Buchbinder, University of New Hampshire
Dr. Orly Buchbinder is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), where she teaches a variety of courses in both mathematics and mathematics education. Dr. Buchbinder’s research agenda focuses on teaching and learning reasoning and proving at the secondary level. She explores how secondary teachers’ expertise in teaching mathematics via reasoning and proving evolves over time. She also researches how technological tools can support the work of teachers in classrooms and how teachers develop knowledge and skills to support student learning with technology. Dr. Buchbinder received several prestigious research grants from the US National Science Foundation. She presented her work nationally and internationally and published in leading mathematics education journals. Dr. Buchbinder’s scholarship focuses on the robust connection between research and practice and the unwavering commitment to improving mathematics education by enhancing mathematics teaching.
Dr. Irene Biza, University of East Anglia
Dr Irene Biza is Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. Irene has PhD and MSc in Mathematics Education and BSc in Mathematics. She worked for several years as mathematics teacher and development officer in Greece before getting a Lectureship in Mathematics Education at Loughborough University (2010) and then at the University of East Anglia (2013). Irene’s research focuses on the mathematical learning at the post-compulsory level, use of digital resources and mathematics teachers’ discourses. She is co-leader of the MathTASK, a collaborative research and development programme about mathematics teachers’ pedagogical and mathematical discourses. Irene is Associate Editor of the Journal of Mathematical Behavior and member of the editorial board of several journals such as Educational Studies in Mathematics and International Journal of Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education. Dr. Sepideh Stewart, University of Oklahoma
Dr. Sepideh Stewart is a professor of mathematics with a Ph.D. in mathematics education, focusing on research on linear algebra education. She is currently the chair of the Education Committee of the International Linear Algebra Society and the second Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group. She has numerous publications in linear algebra education and collaborates with research mathematicians. Her current research interests are bridging abstract and numerical linear algebra with coding and applications. She is the editor of, And the Rest is Just Algebra (2017) and co-editor of Challenges and Strategies in Teaching Linear Algebra (2018). She is one of the guest editors of a special issue of ZDM (2019) on Research on Teaching and Learning in Linear Algebra, the editor of Mathematicians’ Reflections on Teaching A Symbiosis with Mathematics Education Theories (2023), and is also one of the co-editors of a special issue of PRIMUS, Linear Algebra Education: An International Perspective, to appear soon.
