Configuration spaces of hard disks inhabiting a bounded region of the plane have been used in 2D statistical mechanics in order to model and study phase transitions in thin films and at interphases. I will discuss topological aspects of these configuration spaces when the Euclidean metric is replaced by the L-infinity metric. Emphasis is placed on their fundamental groups and their relation to right-angled Artin groups and HNN extensions.
