Fred Cohen and I published a basic paper about commuting elements and spaces of homomorphisms back in 2007. Since then there has been a lot of work on understanding the cohomology and homotopy type of these spaces. In this talk I will review some of these results and explain a recent stable splitting for commuting elements in the unitary groups, obtained in joint work with Simon Gritschacher and José Manuel Gómez.
