There are several use cases of blockchain technology in the energy and utility sector. This paper aims to provide a survey of the changes in the utility industry with peer-to-peer transaction mediums. We also categorize and explain the use cases. We also detail the benefits of the blockchain technology on these use cases as well as the issues.

Most use cases are focusing on the trade of energy. We introduce a novel use case on transparent disaster recovery. We describe the actors on the system, we identify trust issues and we show the benefits of using blockchain in this use case. We provide an alternative solution that also provides relief to the disaster victims
