Workshop on Operator Algebras and Applications: Symmetry and Structure
Description
Much of the richness and fascination of operator algebras derives from the fact that their structure theory admits a special dialectical character that bridges two points of view. On the one hand, large classes of examples can be built from data of a group-theoretic, dynamical, or combinatorial nature that then registers with varying degrees of faithfulness at the algebraic level. On the other hand, the abstract analysis of internal structure often reveals unexpected symmetries that may not be immediately apparent in individual examples and that can be ascribed to the extra homogeneity that distinguishes operator algebras from the more rigid parametrized set-up of, say, group actions or groupoids. The workshop will explore the various ways in which this dialectic plays out in current research across a spectrum of themes in C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras.
