Centres
Learn more about Centres for research and collaboration at the Fields Institute.
A Centre gives a specific area of the mathematical sciences a lasting institutional home within Fields. Centres typically form around interdisciplinary subjects, drawing together expertise across departments and creating a bridge between academic, industrial and government research.
Each Centre is led by a Director and a Steering Committee, which sets its scientific direction and its collaborations with counterpart groups internationally.
A Centre's activities take the same form as the rest of the Institute's programming, including workshops, conferences, seminars, training and public outreach, and are held at Fields or a partner university. Centres are funded through the same channels as other Institute activities.
Centre for Financial Industries
The Centre for Financial Industries is the Institute's focal point for mathematical finance, consolidating Fields' established position in the field and providing a structure for collaboration between researchers, practitioners and corporate partners.
Centre for Mathematical AI
The Centre for Mathematical AI brings mathematicians, computer scientists and machine learning researchers together around two questions: how mathematics can make AI systems safer and more transparent, and how AI can, in turn, become a genuine tool for mathematical discovery. Its work includes building AI tools that mathematicians can use without specialized AI training, and applying mathematical rigour to open problems in AI theory itself.
Centre for Mathematical Medicine
Formed by consolidating several existing research initiatives, the Centre for Mathematical Medicine is the only organization of its kind in Canada. As a nidus for researchers working across medicine and mathematics, it focuses on the mathematics underlying therapeutic challenges, and organizes teaching programs, workshops and seminar series.
Centre for Mathematics Education
The Centre for Mathematics Education is devoted to research in mathematics education and, by extension, STEM education more broadly, and oversees the Math Ed Forum. It also assists in selecting the annual recipient of the Margaret Sinclair Memorial Award for innovation and excellence in mathematics education.
Centre for Quantitative Analysis and Modelling
The Fields Centre for Quantitative Analysis and Modelling (Fields CQAM) was created in response to the need for a critical mass of highly-skilled quantitative scientists capable of deploying the cutting-edge techniques and methodologies required to advance discovery in Ontario’s booming technological sector.
NRC-Fields Mathematical Sciences Collaboration Centre
The NRC-Fields Mathematical Sciences Collaboration Centre brings researchers from the National Research Council of Canada and those affiliated with the Fields Institute together to conduct shared mathematical research connected to national research priorities.
Centre for Sustainable Development
The Centre for Sustainable Development brings together research on smart villages and smart communities, climate risk, ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) investing, and related themes in sustainability.
Lab for Network Science
Networks play a central role in understanding the brain. From mapping the anatomy of connections between neurons, to understanding how finely tuned patterns of connections create computation, networks are a central mathematical tool. New mathematical approaches to neural networks are critically needed at this time, both for understanding the neural systems that make up our brains and to create “explainable AI” (XAI) that will be foundational for ethical applications of this technology for years to come.
MADS Lab
MADS Lab is an extension of the Centre for Quantitative Analysis and Modelling Centre, and was funded by the Government of Ontario to connect academic research with industrial applications. By collaborating with corporate partners, the lab applies advanced mathematical solutions to real-world challenges in science and technology, enhancing organizational processes, products, and services across finance, healthcare and industrial engineering.
