"The summer at Fields is one of the best summers I’ve had yet, thanks to the insightful work, awesome people and lively city.
During the day, our group would all contribute to our current ideas, then write up and discuss the outcome. We met with our supervisors once a week to discuss our progress. From time to time, our supervisors also gave us mini-lectures on things related to our project, so it was all really collaborative and open-ended. It was up to us to decide the pace and what we wanted to work on, which really gave me a taste of “research life”. I also attended some of the numerous seminars and talks available at Fields throughout the summer, which was awesome because I got to understand what people are doing at the forefront of the fields of my interest and to be exposed to general ideas from other fields as well.
Our group would usually head out for lunch at the nearby Chinatown, and of course as mathematicians we couldn’t miss out on caffeine, so teatime every day at 3 pm was great, too. We usually met other program participants there where we’d talk about our work, or anything else we were interested in.
After work, the entire FUSRP cohort would organize dinners, movies, board game nights, and it was really fun getting to know so many people from all around the world in such a great city as Toronto. The Fields Institute also organized several social activities, such as going to the Toronto Islands and Dream in High Park (watching Hamlet in High Park at sunset!), which allowed us to have a super fun time exploring the city together."
