Fields Institute Facilities
Learn about Meeting and Event Space at the Fields Institute.
Founded in 1991, the Fields Institute is an advanced institute for research in mathematical sciences in a four-storey structure on the University of Toronto’s downtown campus. It is also a new typological model for interactive collaboration of world-class scientists of the highest calibre. The Fields Institute moved to its current Toronto location in 1995 from a previous University of Waterloo location. Designed by Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, the building stands with grace among the neighbouring historic buildings along College Street where it is situated. The building exterior's simplicity is contrasted by its many architectural surprises inside.
The interior responds to the Institute's mandate to create an environment to accommodate collaborative and independent research modes. An exposed concrete structure defines a central atrium with open corridor-balconies arranged along the perimeter. The corridor-balconies are developed as informal areas to accommodate impromptu or planned research and discussion. Slate blackboards are located throughout the building to record spontaneous formulas and catalyze interaction among scientists. The roof is expressed as a single plane of Douglas fir decking spanning an exposed metal truss system to create clerestorey windows on all four sides.
The atrium space is animated by three dynamic elements organized along a central axis: a large wood-burning fireplace made of Italian stucco, a wood-paneled helical stair and an elliptical reception desk.
The interior material palette of plaster walls, tiles, carpet and tinted concrete is characterized by simplicity, economy and warmth, while the selective use of wood, metal and stone refers to the broadest tradition of collegiate architecture. The mass and scale of the new building responds to its existing context. A masonry wall of red brick and rusticated limestone creates a discreet street facade while the back of the building is framed by two towers clad in coloured stucco.

It effectively unifies the interior's design and connects the upstairs offices with the activities of the second floor. It is not an uncommon site to see our visitors (and staff) gazing meditatively at its curvature, perhaps waiting for a spark of inspiration. |
