Cognitive Mathematics: What Is It and What It Implies for Mathematics Education
Panel Discussion: Marcel Danesi, Stacy Costa, and Dragana Martinovic In this panel, we will reflect on the ideas presented in the previous sessions and how they relate to the cognitive mathematics field. The term “cognitive mathematics” was introduced a few years ago in parallel with other “cognitive sciences,” such as cognitive psychology, cognitive linguistics, cognitive anthropology, and so on. It constitutes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the interconnections among mathematics, culture, the arts, learning theories, research within AI on math cognition, and education. It thus constitutes a broad approach to the study of mathematics cognition involving the interplay of ideas from the humanities to computer science and psychology.
