Abstract:
John Charles Fields (1863–1932) is best known for his role in the creation of the Fields Medal. However, he was also a pivotal figure in fostering a research-level mathematics community in Canada. We provide a brief account of Fields’ formative years and then offer an overview of his mathematical research, particularly his later work in algebraic function theory. This biographical and mathematical background enriches our understanding of Fields and his role as a scientific organizer.
